Abstract
Conditions under which pressure gradients might be expected in porous catalyst pellets are investigated and a priori bounds on the magnitude of the pressure variations are obtained for the limiting cases of bulk diffusion control and Knudsen diffusion control.Two previous investigations of the effect of neglecting pressure gradients in calculating the effectiveness factor are compared critically, and a third procedure is suggested which avoids inconsistencies inherent in the earlier work and appears to give a better approximation.
