Abstract

Abstract Pressure fluctuations associated with coherent motions within a forest canopy at Camp Borden, Canada, are retrieved from tower measurements of velocities and temperatures using the governing equations. The retrieved pressure fluctuations consist largely of components resulting from strong mean wind sheer near the top of the canopy and have consistent phase relationships with velocities within a coherent structure. Pressure transport and pressure gradient interaction terms in the budgets of turbulent kinetic energy and momentum flux, estimated using the retrieved pressure fluctuations, are shown to play a large role in transporting turbulent kinetic energy and momentum flux within a forest.
