Abstract

The polymer‐induced change in the pressure drop in a flow through a conical orifice is calculated. The calculations are based on a simple model, which incorporates the physical picture of macromolecular stretching in strong flows and Batchelor’s theory for the stress in a suspension of rod‐like particles. Good agreement with the experimental data of James & Saringer (J. Fluid Mech. 97, 655, 1980) is obtained.
