Abstract
The pressure dependence of cobalt diffusion has been measured in structurally relaxed, melt-spun metallic Fe 39Ni 40B 21 glass. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron-microprobe analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The radio-tracer technique in conjunction with ion-beam sputtering for serial sectioning was employed. Within error margins, no significant pressure dependence of 57Co diffusion was observed. The activation volume of diffusion V act = kT ∂ln D/∂p⊥ T = (−0.1 ± 0.1) Ω , withΩ being the average volume of an atom of the alloy. These results indicate that diffusion of cobalt in FeNiB in the relaxed state is not mediated through quasi-vacancies in thermal equilibrium.
