Abstract
ABSTRACT This paper presents case studies of pressure buildup analyses in certain oilfields in California producing from the Monterey formation. These miocene formations are thick siliceous and calcareous organic sediments. Production from the Monterey formation dates back to the turn of the century. In recent years additional exploration efforts have resulted in the discovery of new fields in the Monterey formation. Because of the impact that these fields will have on the proved reserves of hydrocarbon in California, improved evaluation techniques are required for these complex lithologies. A review of conventional evaluation methods followed by a discussion and the importance of pressure transient tests are included here. Several case studies on onshore and offshore fields producing from the Monterey shale are presented.
