Abstract

The nitrogen broadening coefficient γ, of the J=8.5←7.5 (F 1F 1) pure rotational absorption transition of NO at 851913.2(1) MHz has been measured using a tunable far-infrared laser spectrometer. The pressure broadening data was analysed by two independent methods, firstly, a non-linear least-squares routine which fitted the complete profile to a Voigt lineshape and secondly, the Olivero and Longbothum [J. Quantum Spectry. Radiative Transfer 17 (1977) 233] analytical formula for the linewidth. Both methods were found to be in reasonable agreement and the average values for γ were 2.15(4) and 1.93(4) MHz Torr −1, respectively.
