Abstract

Using a self-adjusting, microprocessor-controlled valve and computer-controlled piston pumps, modifier and pressure gradients may be generated separately or simultaneously to improve separation. For several test compounds, the reproducibility of retention time and peak area is found to be less than 2% relative standard deviation when pressure and modifier concentration are programmed together. Examples are shown for samples of polystyrenes and epoxy resins where programming both composition and pressure yields a separation which is superior to programming only one or the other.
