Abstract
Two nuclear physicists, a nuclear engineer, and an economistmmembers of the Union of Concerned Scientists--released a report today that examined a new problem with nuclear reactor safety. According to the report, recent tests carried out under Atomic Energy Commission sponsorship have indicated that presently designed reactor safety systems are likely to fail if the systems supplying cooling water to a reactor should rupture or break. The reactor core is then expected to melt down and ultimately lose appreciable quantities of radioactive material into the environment. In the words of the report, “The resulting catastrophe and loss of life might well exceed anything this nation has seen in time of peace.”
