Abstract

“Passion to explore + love of physics = exploration geophysics” was one of the responses that I received recently when asking graduate students in a multicomponent seismic exploration class “Why are you in geophysics?” Other enlightening responses included: “My father and uncle are geophysicists and live happy lives”; “I've been fascinated by natural science since I was a kid”; “My parents chose for me when I played too many video games”; “I'm back at school, starting a family soon, and wanted a better career. Friends said ‘geophysics.'” Themes shared through most of the answers included the advice of family and friends; curiosity about the earth; love of science; the blending of math, physics, and geology; and, for many, the opportunity for a good salary and interesting life. All great reasons to develop a career in geophysics!
