Abstract

Another Appalachia' provoked both comment and criticism. Although some of the factual details were challenged, no one challenged the basic tenet that the level of financial support available for scientific research does not measure up to the requirements of existing programs. As one critic pointed out, however, the matter cannot be dropped on this note, for the article could be interpreted as implying that there is no real understanding in Congress of the value of basic research as contrasted to applied research, and that there is no definitive policy concerning the level of support that should be given basic science. Another critic was of the opinion that the government was already too lavish in its support of research in universities.
