Abstract

The University of Texas at Austin — McDonald Observatory enjoys the darkest night sky of any major astronomical observatory in North America. The observatory has effectively halted the spread of polluting outdoor lighting through a long-term program that includes: (a) educating the public and government officials about lighting issues; (b) assisting communities with the adoption of ordinances that mandate the use of non-polluting lights; and (c) providing financial assistance to homeowners and businesses for replacement fixtures or full cut-off shield purchases. Private donations fund the hardware purchases. The McDonald Observatory funds a quarter-time position for working with communities and individuals on lighting issues. Our success has been limited when we have approached lighting control by discussing its importance to astronomy. Our success has been substantial when we have focussed on the benefits of quality outdoor lighting for the end user, emphasizing waste light reduction, increased efficiency, decreased long-term cost, the elimination of glare and light trespass, improved visibility and security.Key wordsObservatoryEducationCommunityefficiency
