Abstract

During the last decade an intensified destruction of sea and ocean shores has been observed in many countries. In some places this process has reached real disaster levels since the annual recession rate (particularly of sandy shores) can reach 10 m per year. The working group of the IGU, established at the “XXII Geographical Congress” in Montreal, 1972, undertook to collect all available data on this problem and to attempt to reveal the causes of these processes.
