Abstract

The United States is the only well-resourced nation with a maternal mortality rate that is on the rise. According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 935 pregnancy-related deaths occur in the United States each year (Hoyert & Miniño, 2020). Roughly two-thirds of these deaths are preventable, and an increasing percentage are happening in the late postpartum period, more than 43 days after the end of pregnancy (Davis, Smoots, & Goodman, 2019; Hoyert & Miniño, 2020).
