Abstract

USS Midway, in San Diego, California, was once one of the longest serving aircraft carriers sailing the Atlantic and Pacific oceans from 1945 to 1992 but lives today promoting naval service and unique traditional engineering. Named after the most critical 6-minute maritime battle in the beginning of World War 2 in the Pacific, a combination of pure luck and incredible naval tactical prowess, USS Midway is 78 years “young” today, restored in 2004 as a museum to share the exemplary engineering feat in structural modifications, preservation techniques, and educational inspiration while promoting the tradition of naval heritage. From thousands of aircraft small runway launches and landings, propellor to jet aircraft, as seen in the movie “Top Gun”, our 800 volunteers are our new “main engines” as USS Midway serves the new mission: “Preserve the historic USS Midway and the legacy of those who serve, inspire and educate future generations, and entertain our museum guests.”
