Abstract

Rationale To determine the role of preservatives in CUA. Methods 19 consecutive patients with CUA seen in a private allergy clinic. Most patients needed histamine receptor antagonists (HRA) daily to control CUA. A 2 week food and symptoms diary was done before and after PFD-list given and explained. Results 12/16 (75%) of non dermatographic CUA patients improved between 80-100% on PFD. These patients did not require HRA most days. Urticaria recurred within 1-22 hours after challenge with preservative containing foods. 2/15 could not comply with PFD. 1/15 had elevated ANA and CRP and did not improve. 1/15 improved after discontinuing her medication. 2/3 (66%) patients with CUA & dermatographism did not improve on the diet. 1/3 (33%) improved by 50% on PFD. Conclusions PFD is a safe and efficient mean to treat CUA for many patients with CUA. A list of food allowed needs to be given to increase compliance. Some patients cannot comply. Dermatographism is a physical urticaria and responds poorly to dietary measures.
