Abstract

The lifetime of Cr(VI) as a function of pH, container material, initial concentration and temperature has been investigated in pure water solutions. The observated behaviour of the chromium species has been further checked on several waste water samples. Based on these results a recommendation for the preservation of samples for the determination of Cr(VI) in water and waste water is made: By means of a preservation solution containing carbonate buffer (pH 9) and EDTA [for masking Cr(III)] losses of Cr(VI) over 7 days could be reduced from 60–80% to less than 20%.
