Abstract
The following article traces the development of preservation as an integral part of collection management within the MIT Libraries. Goals were first defined in 1977 and implemented gradually in response to the specific needs of the working collections in science and technology. A condition survey of pre-1960 engineering journals demonstrated the brittle condition of retrospective materials and the need for a more comprehensive program to coordinate collection assessment with preservation decisions. In 1985 the position of Preservation and Collections Librarian was created.
