Such a framework can and must tolerate anything except the existence of that rival mode of universalism, which for many centuries asserted the validity of such non-relativist principles as objective knowledge, ‘natural’ social laws, and the psychic unity of mankind. The Victorians, as prominent practitioners of the rival mode, must necessarily fall foul of late-twentieth century cultural criticism. This explains why, despite all Stocking’s ‘historicizing’ endeavours, one is left with the impression that there is one rule for cannibals and wifestranglers, quite another for anthropological Victorians.
