Abstract

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic used for the treatment of acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections and as long-term prophylaxis for those patients who experience recurrent urinary tract infections.1,2 It should be stressed that almost all available information on chronic nitrofurantoin-induced lung toxicity (c-NILT) originates from case reports. To the best of our knowledge, the only available cohort of patients with c-NILT was described by Mendez et al,3 more than 15 years ago, but the natural history of c-NILT has not been studied thoroughly.
