Abstract
The object of this study was to survey African American librarians regarding their careers. A questionnaire was mailed to 300 African American librarians (AALs) who are currently working. Responses to each question were analyzed. The results showed that close to one-half of AALs (47.5%) were employed in public libraries. Seventy-one percent of AALs found their first professional library position in less than six months. Seventy-five percent of the respondents had been promoted at least once since they graduated from library school. Lack of recognition and appreciation by the library was perceived as the number one barrier to job satisfaction experienced by AALs.
