Abstract

Malawi has a population of approximately 11 million people, most of whom live in rural areas, although a significant number live in Blantyre, where the industrial, business and cultural centres are situated. These demographics are reflected in the causes and types of burns people in Malawi sustain. Since it first began treating patients in 1994, the burns unit at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), which serves approximately two million people, has made a significant impact on the treatment of burns in Malawi. A study by Komolafe et al. found that very young children sustained a significant proportion of burns occurring in the country and suggested a need for an effective campaign targeting the causes of burns in this subgroup.
