Abstract

The present status of experimental searches for glueballs is reviewed. A critical examination is made of the criteria used in the identification of glueballs. It is concluded that the mixing of glueball states with normal q q states deprives us so far of any ‘smoking guns’, and at least two states, f 0(1500) and f 0(1710) remain viable contenders for the scalar (0 ++) glueball. It is also shown that in the proton-antiproton annihilation experiments no evidence is found for the existence of ξ(2230), the much heralded candidate for the tensor glueball.
