Abstract

An outline of the regulations and present activities in the field of clinical pharmacology in Italy is presented. Regulations concerning preclinical work are those of the European Economic Community, but no specific gUidelines for conducting clinical trials are available at the moment. The United States FDA requirements, however, are currently followed by most companies. A regulatory scheme on clinical pharmacology is being prepared and should become available shortly. Research work is being carried out in several industries as well as in University institutions. There is one official chair (University of Florence: Director, Prof. F. Sicuteri), and two courses are given at other universities. Leading work in Italy has been in the cardiovascular field, pain receptors, intermediary metabolism, antibiotics, and psychopharmaceuticals.
