Abstract

Static shunt devices capable of generating or absorbing a controlled amount of reactive power (generally known as static compensators or static var systems) have been used for some time to control voltage distortion caused by rapidly fluctuating loads such as arc furnaces. Larger units are now being applied to support system voltages at selected locations in a transmission system and thus increase power transfer capabilities and stability margins.Certain types of device which can provide independent control for each phase can also be used to reduce or eliminate voltage unbalance. This paper discusses a dual-purpose installation at Sishen intended to reduce voltage unbalance and provide voltage support. It also discusses the probable role of static compensators in future expansion of the Escom transmission system.
