Abstract

The properties of woven, warp-knitted, and weft-knitted fabrics are discussed and aspects of their yarn count/fabric weight relationships compared. Yardage production on conventional looms and other weaving machines, on warp-knitting machines, and on circular weft-knitting machines, is compared from the points of view of speed of production, machine capital costs, yarn preparation requirements, and yarn-turnover time. Reference is made to fully-fashioned weaving and the development of new methods of warp-and weft-knitting. It is suggested that weft-knitting offers most scope for future expansion.
