Abstract

This paper reports the results from the experimental investigations carried out to understand pedestrian motion in both commercial and controlled laboratory environments. Both group and individual velocities of pedestrian motion has been measured with and without the presence of disturbance in the path way. The average group velocity in the real time experiments is 1.076 m/s (including the slow movement during the disturbance), while it is 0.944 m/s in the controlled experiments. The values of the average group and individual pedestrian velocities obtained in the present study match well with theoretical value (0.8 m/s) predicted by (2000)for aim wide passage for panic driven crowd movement.
