Abstract

Abstract Reports the occurrence of foraminifers in the Beauce millstone formation capping Stampian (Oligocene) sands of the northern and central Paris basin, France. The foraminifer fauna of the formation, previously described as a lacustrine deposit on the basis of included fresh-water macrofossils, is generally indicative of deposition in a shallow warm sea. The foraminifers therefore probably represent forms which were introduced during marine invasions of the dune areas of the Stampian sea coast and which adapted to the conditions obtaining in the lake basins.
