Abstract

During 1976 a total of 292,638,000 prescriptions were written in England by doctors in general practice, dispensing doctors, service doctors, dentists and out patient hospital doctors. These were dispensed at a total cost of £450,714,000 for an estimated population in England of 46,418,000. The top three drugs in terms of the number of doses prescribed were codeine, paracetamol and diphenhydramine whilst the top three in terms of number of prescriptions written were paracetamol, diazepam and codeine.
