Abstract

The Buin of Papua New Guinea have a two-line relationship terminology, and they state that marriage is prescribed with a specific kin category, which includes the genealogical specification MBD/FZD. I construct a table as a representation of this terminology, ideally relating kin categories, social groups, and lines. I then seek to examine the extent of congruence, if any, which exists between kin categories, lines, and the actual Buin groups which exchange spouses. Most importantly I look at the impact on actual kin term usage of marriages with persons not of the prescribed category, and therefore their impact on the extent of congruence between kin categories, social groups, and lines, for both the Buin and the analyst.
