Abstract

It is generally viewed that contraception is safer than undergoing a full term pregnancy. However, health professionals should still exercise caution when prescribing. A comprehensive history should be taken from all clients including medical history, family history, obstetric history, menstrual history and sexual history. This history should be used alongside the UK medical eligibility criteria (UKMEC) guidelines to guide prescribing. The article also includes some guidance on prescribing contraception for women with some common medical conditions. Health professionals should always consider contraception when assessing women's health needs.
