Abstract

Prior to the initiation of various types of phonation, intrinsic laryngeal muscle activity adjusts the vocal folds in a physiologic phonatory set to interact with the respiratory air stream. It appears that the laryngeal pattern is dependent upon the following variables: (1) type of initiation (abrupt, simultaneous, breathy), (2) voiced-voiceless initial phoneme, (3) controlled or “free” phonation, (4) frequency of phonation, and (5) intensity of phonation. Examples of the various activity patterns occurring between the termination of respiratory inspiration and the initiation of phonation will be shown.
