Abstract

Annually, millions of high school and junior high school age students participate in athletics. At some time these individuals are required to have a preparticipation examination. Guidelines and requirements concerning this examination vary from state to state. It is usually apparent that the design and implementation of the examination are the result of concerned physicians and health care professionals. The health care team approach is necessary to represent a complete sports medicine program. It is this author's opinion that the health care team would benefit from active participation of a hand therapist. The knowledge and expertise this specialty encompasses would greatly enhance the effectiveness of the sports medicine program.A sample upper extremity examination is presented to serve as a guideline for the clinician. This is not intended to be a substitute for any part of the existing preparticipation examinations but rather to serve as an effective adjunct in the prevention of injury to young athletes.
