Abstract

PREVIEWThe increasing number of patients at risk for progressive kidney disease in the United States demands a collaborative approach to providing care for patients with this condition. A team-based initiative is particularly important as patients prepare for renal replacement therapy (RRT). In this article, Drs Bolton and Owen discuss specific aspects of RRT preparation, including management of blood pressure, treatment of anemia and phosphorus retention, dietary modifications, vascular access considerations, and control of lipid levels to reduce cardiovascular risk.
