Abstract

Studies of functional behaviour in industry such as designing are of value since they offer the opportunity for training and enhancement of skilled performance. However, the bulk of studies carried out in this field have been prescriptive and it is here argued that a shift is needed towards more descriptive approaches. Analysis of methodologies available identifies limitations in their ability to account for the extensive variation in skilled behaviour: multiple method approaches are recommended as more appropriate for future studies. Practical experience of this methodology is described. Finally, some comments on modelling and analysis of data of this kind are offered.
