Preparing for 2023: Guidelines for Hospital Inpatient and Observation Services

Abstract

This article reviews changes to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) guidelines for initial and subsequent hospital inpatient and observation evaluation and management (E/M) services. Topics covered include the following: Codes reported for E/M services provided to patients in inpatient or observation status Distinguishing initial and subsequent encounters according to CPT guidelines Examples of coding for hospital E/M services, including when E/M services are provided in other settings prior to admission to inpatient or observation status on the same date
