Abstract

A laboratory-oriented introductory course for beginning high school students is described. Specially developed materials, including a device called the “category approach” to the use of mathematics in physical reasoning are discussed. Some techniques and materials from the PSSC Physics program have been incorporated. Vertical articulation of the entire science curriculum is achieved through this Introductory Physics course, Chemistry, PSSC Physics, and Advanced Placement Chemistry. A cyclic structuring of all concepts to replace needless repetition of topics has been effected. The present paper deals specifically with the development of the Introductory Physics course.
