Abstract

This paper aims to construct a novel antibacterial mesoporous silica (SBA-15) material containing chlorhexidine gluconate (CG), and to investigate its characterization, release, antibacterial activity, and toxicity. According to the results, SBA-15/CG antibacterial agents, which were successfully prepared with different drug concentrations, exhibited promising sustained-release properties, as well as excellent antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Moreover, different doses of SBA-15/CG did not cause pathological changes in the organs of rats. Therefore, SBA-15/CG is non-toxic and has promising and broad clinical applications for bacterial infections.
