Abstract

Abstract An improved experimental arrangement for the preparation of optical waveguiding layers by field-assisted ion exchange is described. It is shown that the commercial crown flint glass KF3 is an excellent substrate material for the generation of multimode layers with step-like refractive index profiles by NaTl ion exchange. The NaTl exchange rates and the index profiles of the layers are compared with those obtained by thermal exchange under zero-field conditions.
