Abstract

A new process of producing titanium carbide powder from ilmenite concentrate was put forward. The ilmenite concentrate was reduced by graphite powder at 1500?C for 6 hours, with the reduction products of TiC, Fe and MgO. The porous reduction products were agitation leached in ferric chloride solution at 25?C for 60 minutes. After the filtration, TiC powder accompanied by little MgAl2O4 and Mg2SiO4 were obtained. Finally, the element Fe was recycled from the filtrate in the form of ?-FeOOH after blowing air for 3 hours at 80?C. The size of rod-like ?-FeOOH particle was less than 1?m.
