Abstract

Abstract The solubilization of TiCl3 catalysts in organic solvents was carried out to enhance the activity for random copolymerization of ethylene with propylene. β-TiCl3 · 1/3AlCl3 was solubilized in halogenated hydrocarbon solvents by using an appropriate ether as donor. α-TiCl3 free from AlCl3 was found to be soluble in the presence of a VCl4 or VOCl3 ligand and a suitable ether. The solubilized TiCl3 catalysts showed high catalytic activities for the copolymerization using trialkylaluminum compounds as a cocatalyst. The copolymers obtained possessed low crystallinities. Also, the copolymers seem to contain a microblock type of sequences and outstandingly high tensile strength and elongation at break compared to copolymers by conventional VCl4 and VOCl3 catalysts.
