Abstract
PbS microcrystal-doped SiO 2 glass thin films were successfully prepared by RF-sputtering method. The influence of sputtering conditions, such as input power, substrate temperature and relative surface area of PbS pellets in the sputtering target, on the size of PbS microcrystals in the resultant films was investigated. The larger blue shift of the optical absorption edge caused by the quantum confinement effect was seen in the PbS particles of smaller size. The dependence of the blue shift on the particle size is interpreted in terms of the hyperbolic band model.
