Abstract
1. A technique has been developed for the production of parts from cast iron turnings. It consists in the preparation of cold compacts, heating in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, and dynamic hot pressing under a drop hammer or a power hammer. The process may be employed for the production of nonporous or porous materials from cast iron turnings, having a fine-grained structure and small, uniformly-distributed graphite inclusions, with mechanical properties approaching those of the starting bulk cast iron. 2. The optimum parameters for the production of materials from cast iron turnings are: compacting pressure in the production of cold compacts 490 MN/m2; heating temperature of compacts 1327°K; reduced work of densification 118–187 J/cm3; compact dimension ratio hd/d 0.7 max. 3. Experimental data were subjected to mathematical processing, resulting in the derivation of analytical relationships between compact density and the work expended on compact densification.
