Abstract

In this paper, NaYF4:Yb, Er nanoparticles (NPs) were coated with hydrophilic- polystyrene (HPS) by in situ polymerization. The morphologies, structures, as well as hydrophilic stabilities of the NaYF4: Yb, Er NPs and the NaYF4: Yb, Er /HPS NPs composite were characterized by Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and up-conversion photoluminescence spectrometry. TEM results shows that the HPS-encapsulated NaYF4:Yb, Er NPs are well dispersed and spherical in shape in water phase, the size of spherical particles was estimated to be 140 nm, FT-IR and TGA results revealed that these NPs were coated with HPS. Meanwhile, Fluorescence tests showed that after HPS coated, the fluorescent position and intensity of NPs did not changed significantly. Settlement test results revealed that HPS coated NaYF4:Yb, Er NPs had more dispersion and stability than uncoated ones in aqueous system.
