Abstract

ABSTRACT: The ability of synthetic boehmite (aluminum oxide hydroxide) to remove phosphate ions from cow's milk was investigated. Boehmite was added to samples of cow's milk, and the concentrations of total phosphorus, phosphate ions and other substances in the filtrates were measured after filtration. It was found that boehmite adsorbed phosphate ions efficiently and that the adsorption depended on treatment time and on the amount of boehmite. Since levels of phosphorus bound to organic substances and ingredients in the milk in addition to the sensory evaluation did not change, the quality of the milk was considered to be the same as that of the original milk. These results indicate that synthetic boehmite is useful for removing phosphate ions from cow's milk
