Abstract

Preparation of layered stracture LiNiO2 by the alcoholate method has been studied. The spinel type LixNiO2 (x<1) has been formed by pre-heating powder samples obtained by pyrolysis of Ni-alcoholate at 400°C in both oxygen or air at 720°C. The final heating above 720°C in oxygen is important to prepare the electroactive layered LiNiO2. The LiNiO2 prepared by the final heating at 740°C showed excellent discharge capacity of 150mAH/g after several cycles at c.d. 0.4mA/cm2 in lithium secondary batteries. The intercalation and deintercalation of Li+ ion in LixNiO2 (0.4<x<1.0) have been studied by XRD analysis. The initial deintercalation of Li+ from originally prepared LiNiO2 to Li0.41NiO2 proceeded in two phase reaction. Once Li0.41NiO2 is formed by the first charging process, intercalation and deintercalation reactions of Li+ ion in Li0.41NiO2 occur in one phase reaction.
