Abstract

Single crystals of LaB 6 were prepared from a molten zone with an excess of lanthanum (B:La < 6) in order to improve the crystal quality by decreasing the growth temperature. Subgrain boundaries were hardly observed in the crystal when the zone composition was B:La ⩽ 3.6. Then the growth temperature was lower than 2500 °C, more than 200 °C lower than the melting point of LaB 6 (2715 °C).
