Abstract

Immobilized yeast cells were prepared by radiation polymerization at low temperature using porous supports such as Kanuma earth, activated carbon, cellulose powder, and hydrophilic monomers. The ethanol productivity of the immobilized yeast cells increased with decreasing monomer concentration and with an increase in the concentration of porous support. The immobilized yeast cells obtained by copolymerization of both monomers (10% hydroxyethyl methacrylate and 10% methoxy nonaethyleneglycol methacrylate) using 30% Kanuma earth gave the highest ethanol productivity. The immobilized yeast cells were used for the fermentation of glucose obtained by the enzymic hydrolysis of chaff.
