Abstract

Spherical porous polymer particles with high surface area were synthesized using the water-in-oil-inwater (W/O/W) emulsion polymerization and Friedel-Crafts reaction. After the preparation of W/O emulsions, spherical porous polymer particles were synthesized by suspension polymerization. Spherical porous polymer precursor particles were subjected to Friedel-Crafts reaction using a Lewis acid catalyst. The properties of the final products synthesized with different porogen contents in the water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion were explored. The Friedel-Crafts reaction was used to increase the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area. In order to identify the effects of the porogen levels and of the Friedel-Crafts reaction, the synthesized porous particles were analyzed by particle size analyzer (PSA), Hg porosimetry, and the BET surface area method. In addition, the morphology of the particles was investigated by FE-SEM.
