Abstract

MnBi bulk samples with the low temperature phase are successfully prepared by arc-melting under a He atmosphere. Samples with the high temperature phase are firstly prepared by rapidly quenching a molten solution of Mn and Bi which is arc-melted at an atmospheric pressure of He gas. Subsequently, zone-melting is performed by using the arc-melting under a He atmosphere. A compositional analysis of MnBi bulk samples indicates that the microstructure is mainly composed of the low temperature MnBi phase, together with a very small amount of α-Mn and Bi. The value of the magnitization is 0.9 Wb/m 2 (=3.78μ B /Mn atom) at an applied field of 14 T. The spin-flop behavior is observed to occur around 100 K. Excellent corrosion properties are observed for α-Mn-free samples, little oxidation being occurred in the air for more than one year. The present high quality MnBi sample is considered to be useful for the investigation of basic magnetic properties.
