Abstract

While nursing education has started to include gerontological nursing in overall nursing curricula, the time has come to consider more specialized training for geriatric nurses' aides. Geriatric aide education is one way to ensure that the ever-increasing elderly population receives high quality care, since the primary caregiver of elders in the long-term care setting is the nurse's aide. What is the educational preparation required for these aides? Almost 75 percent of the states have no requirements for aide preparation. Fourteen states have legal requirements for aide certification(1). Even fewer states have legal requirements for specialized geriatric training for aides in long-term care. The value of training and geriatric certification for aides in the longterm care system needs to be recognized. Such training results in higher quality care and consequently a higher level 0fsatisfaction with care. Geriatric training can also increase job satisfaction for nurses' aides. The high rate of aide turnover is not only expensive, but also detrimental to an organization's delivery of care.
